According to the latest statistics, about 1.3 million people die of road accidents each year. More than 30 million suffer injuries and disabilities. People between the age of 18 and 44 are the ones who are most affected by road accidents. Poor visibility, drug abuse, use of alcohol, drowsiness, potholes, speeding, destroyed road signs and bursting of the tires are some of the cause of road accidents. Although today, drivers who break the traffic rules are fined heavily, road accidents have not yet reduced significantly. In many countries the number of special roads for instance roads used by school children, have been increased but the number of road accidents is still high. The following will reduce road accidents significantly.
Drivers should avoid driving while they are drunk. The offense of driving while one is drunk is known as driving under the influence of drugs. Slow thinking and slow response as a result of alcohol lead to road accidents. Driving under the influence of alcohol also leads to the miscalculation of distances. Alcohol is a depressant and it causes more than 30% of all road accidents.
A driver should adjust the side and the rear view mirrors. In order to maximize vision of the driver, the rearview mirror, and the side mirrors are supposed to be well positioned. The side mirrors should be adjusted such that the driver can only see the rear door handles. The driver should also correct the blind spot. The blind spot is a point where the driver cannot see an overtaking vehicle. A driver is supposed to look at the rear view mirror, side mirrors and above his/her shoulder before overtaking.
Another driving safety tip is always having on your safety belt. Safety belts attach a person to the seat, therefore, preventing a person from being ejected out of his/her seat during an emergency or a collision. Safety belts can effectively reduce the number of deaths and injuries.
A driver should avoid distractions. The following are some distractions which result in road accidents; use of phones, drinking, eating, talking and adjusting the radio. Adjusting the sound system will force a driver to take his/her eyes from the road which is dangerous. Drivers should avoid all the obstacles to attention.
Drivers should ensure that the tires are in good condition. Many road accidents happen as a result of the bursting of the tires. The tires should also have adequate pressure not only to improve safety but also to save fuel.
Lastly, keeping a safe distance between the driver and the car in front can reduce road accidents. A safe distance will ensure that the driver stops his/her vehicle safely in case the vehicle ahead is stopped immediately.
